Mathematics GCE Tips - O Level & A Level

Master Maths through consistent practice

Mathematics is a skill - the more you practice, the better you get. This guide will help you approach Maths systematically for GCE success.

1. Build Strong Foundations

Before tackling advanced topics, master these basics:

Fractions
Decimals
Percentages
Ratios
Basic Algebra
BODMAS
Indices
Factorization

If you struggle with these, go back and practice them before moving on!

2. Algebra Essentials

Algebra is the foundation of Mathematics. Master these skills:

Solving Equations

Linear: 2x + 5 = 11 → x = 3
Quadratic: x² - 5x + 6 = 0 → (x-2)(x-3) = 0 → x = 2 or x = 3

Quadratic Formula

x = (-b ± √(b² - 4ac)) / 2a
Memorize: Learn the quadratic formula by heart. It appears in almost every exam!

3. Geometry & Trigonometry

Know these formulas and when to use them:

Triangle Rules

Circle Theorems (O Level & A Level)

4. Statistics & Probability

Mean = Sum of values ÷ Number of values
Median = Middle value (when arranged in order)
Mode = Most frequent value
Range = Highest - Lowest

Probability = Favorable outcomes ÷ Total outcomes

5. A Level Topics

For A Level students, also focus on:

Differentiation

If y = xⁿ, then dy/dx = nxⁿ⁻¹
If y = x³, then dy/dx = 3x²

Integration

∫xⁿ dx = xⁿ⁺¹/(n+1) + C
∫x² dx = x³/3 + C

6. Exam Technique

  1. Read the question carefully - underline what's being asked
  2. Show ALL working - you get marks for method even if answer is wrong
  3. Check your arithmetic - careless errors cost marks
  4. Use a ruler for graphs and diagrams
  5. Time management - don't spend too long on one question
  6. Attempt every question - never leave blanks
Calculator Tip: Know your calculator well! Practice using it for statistics, trigonometry, and checking answers.

7. Practice Strategy
